History
For the past 20 years the European School of Genetic Medicine offered post-graduate courses and workshops to physicians, biologists and biotechnologists.

Since its founding the School has developed a reputation for excellence across Europe, gaining recognition and funding from the European Union and other international organizations, including UNESCO and the March of Dimes (USA).

Countries of the Mediterranean area
Every year, the School offers 10-12 one-week courses in different locations, with an enrolment of approximately 500 participants per year. Several European Medical Schools (in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Finland and other countries) request that their graduate Ph.D. students or clinical geneticists in training attend at least one ESGM course and pay for their expenses.

These students usually are already committed to the career in the field of Genetics in Medicine and come mainly from Europe but also from Southern Mediterranean, or MEDA, countries (Algeria, Cyprus, Egypt, Malta, Morocco, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestinian Authority, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey).

Between 20 and 30 percent of the participants are recipients of an EU fellowship. Moreover, using webcasting via Internet (online video streaming technology), ESGM courses are made available in real time to Remote Training Centers across Europe and the Mediterranean region, for interactive distance learning.
